The Maritime Aquarium inspires people of all ages to appreciate and protect the Long Island Sound ecosystem and the global environment through living exhibits, marine science, and environmental education.

With more than 3000 animals representing 300+ species, the Maritime Aquarium gives visitors a window into Long Island Sound, officially designated an Estuary of National Significance, that is rich in aquatic life. This extraordinary ecosystem has supported the economy and culture of this region since prehistoric times.  In the Aquarium’s new 4D theater (which replaces the IMAX Theater), the action visually spills off the two-story screen and over audiences in 3D, with additional thrill-enhancing sensory special effects as bubbles, snow, wind, mists, scents and more.

Additionally, the Maritime Aquarium takes people out onto the waters of Long Island Sound via our vessel – “The Spirit of the Sound.”     Revolutionary in design, this 64-foot all-aluminum catamaran was launched in 2015 as the first research vessel in North America with hybrid-electric propulsion. She runs virtually silently on electric power.   Cruises depart from our dock year-round and have themes including hands-on marine life experiences, seal and bird-spotting excursions and the always-popular “TGIF” cruises.
